Roope Rainisto

"Roope Rainisto, from Finland, has committed the past 25 years to the disciplined study and practice of visual storytelling, particularly in art, design, and photography. His work is a prolonged inquiry into the nature of how we tell stories visually, balancing between the tangible and the ethereal. In recent years, Rainisto has turned his attention to the implications of artificial intelligence in art, exploring how these tools can extend or disrupt our traditional understanding of photographic expression. This is an extension of his lifelong exploration of the intersection of technology and artistry." - Fellowship

Life in West America (2023)

"Life In West America is a post-photography project delving deep into the complexities of the American landscape: the land as a concept, as an ideal, and into the stories and identities of the people inhabiting this vast landscape. Drawing inspiration from the early days of American color photography, the collection combines the visual language of traditional photography with the limitless artifice of AI. We go on a road trip that is both nostalgic and futuristic, inviting the viewers to question their perceptions of reality. One day in the future AI-based generative models will learn and observe the rules of reality, becoming experts. Today diffusion-based generative methods present a rare example of shoshin – the beginner’s mind, full of possibilities, open to new ideas, capable of evocative dreams. The dreamlike artefacts of generative methods are not hidden but celebrated, creating a pioneering post-photographic visual language. The collection also acts as a time capsule, capturing a fleeting moment of generative technology. One day the beginner will become the expert, and the moment will be lost." - lifeinwestamerica.com

Reworld (2023)

"REWORLD explores ideas around the concept of possibility. The artworks present events that could be possible, showing multiple alternative possibilities, happening at the same time, or the same event seen happening from multiple viewpoints. REWORLD also looks at us functioning in society: how easy it is to lose your own identity and become someone else, to lose yourself in the crowd. Are we the same as everyone else? On some level, there is a natural desire to do so. To belong, to be part of a larger cause. To mean something to someone." - Fellowship

Vacation (2024)

"Rainisto creates constantly, experimenting with new ideas and techniques. To produce a series such as Vacation, he begins by considering the emotional quality he wants to express and formulates a narrative he wants the series to communicate. He trains custom models, such as Stable Diffusion, to express this emotional and narrative quality. He then uses AI to produce thousands upon thousands of images which he then carefully curates and edits. The process is both highly technical and deeply intuitive. Vacation foregrounds the use of AI in the creation of the image, its artificiality is showcased rather than concealed. Subsequently, Rainisto calls attention to the artificiality of photography itself. He explains, “In my mind photography has always been about the real and the unreal. Photos are not real. They're 2D pieces of paper. We have this cultural acceptance, shared norms to consider them real.” By blurring the boundaries between real and unreal: authentic and fake, Rainisto hopes that new technologies will foster scepticism and criticality, interrogating the idea of the photograph as an objective source of truth." - Verse.works

Aura (2024)

"Rainisto collaborated with Bright Moments, the globally recognized experiential art collective, to launch AURA— a collection of 100 AI-generated portraits that investigate the evolving relationship between digital identity, perception, and realism. Unlike his previous collections, which often depict cinematic or documentary-style scenes, AURA focuses on the human face as a site of transformation and ambiguity. The portraits evoke a ghostly, liminal presence — straddling the line between lifelike representation and artificial abstraction. The collection, while firmly rooted in contemporary generative aesthetics, draws upon the long tradition of portraiture as a means of capturing essence and emotion. The live minting format of AURA added an interactive and performative dimension to the collection’s release, reinforcing the themes of digital identity and authenticity." - rooperainisto.com

Timelapse (2023)

"Limited collection of 10 works for Proof.XYZ Grails Season 4. Studies on multiple moments in time at once: people that are physically present but mentally absent, and vice versa."

Anima (2022)

"ANIMA is Roope Rainisto’s debut NFT collection, a foundational work that set the stage for his later explorations into AI-generated art. Released in 2022 as part of the dual artist collection 'Ebbs and Flows' —a collaboration between Rainisto and fellow generative artist Somnai—ANIMA represents Rainisto’s personal contribution to this thematic exploration of movement, life, and transformation. Rooted in the Latin origin of the word anima—meaning “soul,” “breath,” or “life force”—the collection examines the fundamental visual patterns that connect all living things. Drawing inspiration from the organic, recursive structures found in nature, ANIMA seeks to express how the essence of life manifests through form and motion. Rainisto uses generative AI as a medium to "bring images to life", capturing the inherent rhythms and energies that animate our reality. His works in this series echo the mathematical elegance of fractals—where patterns at a small scale repeat and expand into grander forms, mirroring the self-similar structures seen throughout nature. At its core, ANIMA is an exploration of the visual language of life itself. The series reflects his fascination with how mathematical structures can mimic biological processes—a recurring theme in his later work." - rooperainisto.com
